The fraud came to light when MLA Sarkar tried to make a transaction using a cheque for Rs. 10 lakh

Congress MLA from South Abhayapuri constituency in Bongaigaon district of Assam, Pradeep Sarkar, has become the latest victim of KYC fraud and cyber crime.

A whopping sum of Rs 80 lakh went missing from the State Bank of India (SBI) account of Pradeep Sarkar.

The fraud came to light when MLA Sarkar attempted to make a transaction using a cheque for Rs. 10 lakh. The bank staff informed him that there were not sufficient funds in his account so his cheque cannot be honoured and that there has been frequent withdrawals using his ATM card.

Speaking to media, Sarkar said that on January 6, a person posing as him visited the SBI’s branch in Abhayapuri, changed the phone number and KYC registered in Sarkar’s SBI bank account with the fake signature of the MLA, and then withdrew money from his account across various branches of his bank account.
Pradeep Sarkar said that he was not even in Abhayapuri on January 6.
The MLA has also expressed apprehension that some bank employees might be involved in the fraud.
According to him, misappropriation of such a huge amount is not possible without the involvement of bank employees.
