Assam: Kaziranga National Park re-opens for tourists

The Kaziranga National Park was closed from May to October due to the looming threat of Brahmaputra river floods

The Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve in Assam has re-opened for tourists today. Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora and Environment and Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary re-opened the park during a small ceremony.

Reopening the park, Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said that tourists would be happy to see more one-horned rhinos and elephants this year than in previous years, as their numbers have increased.

Minister Atul Bora hopes that this year will witness an increase in the number of tourists to the park. He said that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is personally keeping an eye on the park for the welfare and protection of the animals.

It may be mentioned here that the Kaziranga National Park was closed from May to October due to the looming threat of Brahmaputra river floods.

The Kaziranga National Park, famous for its one-horned Rhinoceros is xx kms from Guwahati.
The park was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985.

The approximate distance between Guwahati to Kaziranga National park by road is 194 kilometers.

According to the park authority, 10,768 foreign tourists visited the park last year and 733 in 2021 due to the Covid scare and several restrictions on travelling.

Earlier, Bollywood actors Ayushmann Khurrana, Sharman Joshi also visited the park. Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also visited the park in 2016.
