After securing victory in as many as 7 seats in the recently concluded Deori Autonomous Council or DAC polls, the JPP leadership met Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati late last evening and decided to work as an ally of the BJP in the DAC.
The Assam BJP thus received a shot in the arm as the Jimochayan (Deori) People’s Party, or JPP, which emerged as the biggest opposition by winning seven of the 22 council seats in the DAC election last week, sealed a deal to become a coalition partner of the BJP in the council.
Following a closed-door meeting with JPP leaders, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the JPP will support and collaborate with the BJP to accelerate the overall development of the Deori community, as well as its socioeconomic and political progress.

Sarma said that the chief executive member of the DAC will be from the BJP, which has an absolute majority in the council.
Notably, JPP president Mahesh Deori rushed to Guwahati to meet Sarma to explore the possibility of forming an alliance, even though JPP fought the election as an anti-BJP front.
Though JPP was believed to have the backing of Congress, Deori alleged that Congress attempted to derail their party. In a major embarrassment for the Congress, Deori shunned the possibility of stitching an alliance with the grand old party ahead of upcoming panchayat polls in the state.
