The government and the ULFA pro-talk faction is set to sign a peace agreement in the next few days, that would bring the curtains down to yet another long-standing insurgency in the northeast.

Highly placed sources said the accord is ready for the two sides–the government and the ULFA — to sign at a date that will be fixed soon. Earlier, the accord was to be signed on November 30 but got differed due to some last minute issues.

Pro-talk ULFA sources said they have demanded rehabilitation package for around 700 of their cadres besides one-time assistance to an estimated 2300 martyrs who lost their lives in course of its movement.

The ULFA is also seeking assistance for the 36 cadres of the outfit who are still missing from the time of Operation All Clear launched along Bhutan by the Indian security forces.

The centre may also concede the ULFA demand for the ban on purchase of land in Assam by non- indigenous people.

Once the peace agreement with the pro-talk ULFA group is reached, the government is expected to intensify it’s efforts at trying to open dialogue with the elusive ULFA-Independent (ULFA-I) leader Paresh Baruah.

It has been more than a decade since ULFA leaders like Arabinda Rajkhowa and others were handed over to Indian authorities by Bangladesh. The group’s general secretary Anup Chetia returned to Assam later after completion of his jail term in Bangladesh.
