Water levels in all the flood hit districts of Assam are receding, however, the death toll during the current flood season has mounted to 81 with five more cases of flood caused deaths reported during the past 24 hours from four districts.

Over 27 lakh people in 2,078 villages under 61 revenue circles of 17 districts of the state are still reeling under floods. Currently, 786 relief camps are operational in 13 districts.

The floods have left behind a trail of devastation in Assam’s Mangaldoi district as roads and infrastructure lay damaged. Floods have inundated about 20 villages which caused a breakdown of communication in the region.

Meanwhile, heavy erosion has caused havoc in Assam’s Biswanath district. Villages and farmlands have been gobbled up the river due to erosion this year. Many families of Biswanath and Sotiya are taking shelter at the Biswanath-Panpur embankment after having lost their homes to heavy erosion caused by the Brahmaputra river.

Erosion woes have also hit the people of Dhakuakhana where heavy erosion by Dikrong and Subansiri rivers has gobbled large tracts of land masses.

While floods may be receding currently, the erosion by these two rivers is taking a fierce form with houses of more than 15 families in the region have fallen prey to erosion. So far, no steps have been taken by the authorities to counter the heavy erosion.
