Assam: Consumers using less than 300 units of electricity per month may get power for Rs 1/ unit

The reduction in per unit cost will be subject to prices of cooking gas, and oil remaining steady, the CM added.

Good news is in the offing for power consumers of Assam. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) to explore the possibility of reducing the power tariff to Rs 1 per unit for consumers using less than 300 units per month from April 1, 2025. Currently, consumers are paying Rs 5.85 per unit.

“In Assam, we are charging Rs 5. 85 for per unit of electricity from the common consumers who consume upto 300 units per month. It is my request to the APDCL to plan the next 6 months in such a way that from April 1 next year, we can reduce the per unit charges to Rs 1 for those consuming less than 300 units. It (APDCL) has to make sure that there is no loss of electricity, it should be stopped if an industry or large consumers are stealing electricity,” said CM Sarma.

The reduction in per unit cost will be subject to prices of cooking gas, and oil remaining steady, the CM added.

CM Sarma said that the state government has done a lot of reforms in the power sector which has helped all three electricity boards -Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd. (APDCL), Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Ltd. (AEGCL), and Assam Power Generation Corporation Ltd. (APGCL) to stand on their own feet. But whatever the government does, its end goal is how to give relief to the consumers.
