Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday visited Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district and took stock of the situation following the series of earthquakes that hit the area this morning.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 17 km beneath the epicentre near Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district and caused damages in the village and neighbouring areas.
The Chief Minister visited Tarajan Bangali, a village near the epicenter of the earthquake.
Sonowal assured the people that had been affected by the massive quake, would receive all possible help. He further urged them to not panic and exercise caution.
“Visited the Tarajan Bangali village in Dhekiajuli, a site near the epicentre of the earthquake and took stock of the situation. The morning tremors have affected the village and neighbouring areas. We are with the people at all times. I urged everyone not to panic and stay alert,” Sonowal tweeted.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke to CM Sonowal over phone to take stock of the damage caused by the earthquake and assured all possible support from the centre.
Home Minister Amit Shah also said that the Central government stands firmly with the people of Assam.
An earthquake of magnitude 6.4 on the Richter scale struck Assam’s Sonitpur today morning, followed by a series of aftershocks that occurred throughout the day.
