Assam is celebrating the 39th Abhiruchi Sports Day. Throughout the state including Guwahati, special programmes were held in the morning to mark the occasion.

Every year on September 3, Abhiruchi Sports Day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Arjuna Award winner Bhogeswar Barua.

To mark the occasion, a marathon run was held today morning in Guwahati from the Chandmari Flyover till the Nehru Stadium.

Scores of college and school students took part in the marathon race today. Today a special programme would also be held where athletes who have brought laurels for Assam in recent years would be felicitated.

Noteworthy that ace gymnast Dipa Karmakar also took part in the marathon run in Guwahati today.

The Assam government observing the Sports Pension Diwas today on the sidelines of the Abhiruchi Sports Day and handed out this year’s sports pensions to the veteran sports personalities of the state.

Eight veteran sports personalities were awarded the sport pension this year by the Assam CM. Cabinet ministers Chandamohan Patowary and Pijush Hazarika were also present at the event which was held at Janata Bhawan in Dispur.

Meanwhile, a special programme was held at the Janata Bhawan today on the sidelines of the sports pension day in Dispur when athletes from Assam were felicitated.

In the programme, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma apointed Commonwealth Games gold medal winner Nayanmoni Saikia to the post of deputy superintendent of police.

Nayanmoni was handed a cheque of Rs 50 lakhs at the event. Nayanmoni, who was present at the event dressed in police uniform, was handed the appointment letter by CM Sarma.
