Assam author Aruni Kashyap, first Assamese to be selected as Harvard Radcliffe Institute Fellow

A proud moment for Assam. A writer and translator from the state Aruni Kashyap, who is also an associate professor of English at the University of Georgia in Athens, has been selected as one of the Harvard Radcliffe Institute fellows for the year 2024-2025 awarded by the Redcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at the Harvard University.
Notably, Aruni Kashyap is the first Assamese to get the prestigious fellowship.
He is among 53 fellows selected from around the world for the 25th-anniversary class of the fellow this year.
Aruni shared the news on Facebook and expressed his excitement for getting selected for the fellowship.
“I am thrilled to share the news that I will spend the next year at Harvard University as a Radcliffe Fellow and will be working on a new novel! Very excited very honored!,” his post read.
For the fellowship, he would be given 78 dollars (Rs 65,16,654).
The one-year fellowship program will give the participants the chance to work on research-focused projects in a range of disciplines, including social science, the humanities, and the arts, reported Times of India.
“I am deeply honoured and thrilled to receive this honour. During the fellowship year. I look forward to writing a novel set in the US and Assam and researching at Harvard University’s Schlesinger Library. During my stay at the university, the fellowship will allow me to research the archives at Harvard. I am looking forward to the yearlong series of activities, interacting, and learning from the other fellows,” Aruni Kashyap told Times of India.
Growing up in Guwahati, Aruni moved to Delhi to study literature at St Stephen’s College in 2004.
He later moved to the United States to complete his master’s degree in creative writing.
Besides teaching English, Aruni Kashyap also directs the Creative Writing Program at the University of Georgia, in Athens.
