Assam: 2 more police personnel arrested in connection with Bajali corruption case

The arrested persons have been identified as a cook identified, Samsing Ingland, and a target officer of 10 APBN

Two more police personnel have been arrested in connection to the case of Assam Police personnel allegedly demanding money from a businessman involved in illegal trade in Bajali. With this the total number of arrests have gone up to 11.

The arrested persons have been identified as–Samsing Engleng (cook) and a target officer of 10 APBN Laksh Adhikari.

They both were arrested by Police from Doboka and Hojai respectively.

Both the arrested persons have been taken into police remand for further investigation.

Earlier, in connection to the case, police arrested 9 persons including Bajali SP Siddhartha Buragohain; ASP of Bajali, Gayatri Sonowal, her husband Bobby Singh Sharma, Puskal Gogoi, Dy SP (HQ), Bajali, SI Anup Jyoti Patiri, O/C, Patacharkuchi PS; SI (P) Debajit Giri, i/c Bhawanipur OP under Patacharkuchi PS, ASI Sasanka Das of Patacharkuchi PS, ABC Injamamul Hassan, PSO of Gayatri Sonowal, two drivers Deepjoy Roy and Nabir Ahmed.

The case pertains to a complaint filed by a businessman (dried betel nut trader) Rabiul Islam, who alleged that the police officials had falsely implicated him in a case and demanded money from him, reportedly to the tune of several crores.

If sources are to be believed, the accused cops allegedly demanded Rs 5 crore from the businessman last month and threatened to arrest and kill him in custody if he did not pay the money.

Rabiul Islam reportedly paid them a cheque of Rs 2 crore, and Rs 10 lakh in cash. Police have recovered several documents and proof against the accused officials.

The matter is further being investigated by the CID in Guwahati.

According to sources, a raid was conducted at house no 4 of Jilmil Path in the Survey Beltola area which belongs to ASP Gayatri Sonowal along with residences of her family members and the government office of 10 APBN.
