Mizoram’s Reiek village has been declared the best tourism village in India, winning the gold award. This village won the award along with other five villages including Meghalaya’s ‘Whistling Village,’ Kongthong, and Arunachal Pradesh’s Shergaon village that won Silver.
Tourism Minister of Mizoram, Robert Romawia Royte, accepted the award on behalf of the village and the state from Union Tourism Secretary V. Vidyavathi.
The Tourism Minister, Robert Romawia Royte, was accompanied by Joint Secretary of Tourism V Lalengmawia, VCP Reiek Lalrozama, and other officials during the award ceremony.
The awards were given as part of the Best Tourism Village Competition which was organized by the Central Nodal Agency for Rural Tourism under the Ministry of Tourism.
Over 750 applications were submitted from 315 districts across 31 states of India.
The competition, launched on February 16, 2023, went through several stages, with 80 outstanding villages being selected in early September. A National Evaluation Committee assessed these villages based on various criteria, including cultural and natural resources, economic sustainability, environmental sustainability, governance and prioritization of tourism, health, safety, security, promotion and conservation of culture, development of social sustainability, tourism development, value chain integration, infrastructure, and connectivity.

The Tourism Department of Mizoram has taken great care to create and maintain the houses, including those of the Mizo chieftain, a bachelor’s dormitory, and that of a widow. These houses are fully furnished, offering visitors a glimpse into the glorious history of the highlanders.
Nearby, a few modern Mizo houses have been built to showcase the changes in Mizo lifestyles in line with modern developments.
Moreover, the department has established a cafeteria and a resort that provides decent food and accommodation. Reiek village is also the venue for the annual Anthurium festival, which takes place in September, while April is considered the best time to visit this beautiful village.
