18,600 Quintals of Ginger Lying Unsold in FCI Godown in Mizoram

Ginger was bought by the state under the Bana Kaih (Handholding Scheme) to give relief to farmers

Despite the Mizoram govt’s proactive approach to support local farmers through its flagship Handholding Scheme (Bana Kaih), a significant challenge looms as a large portion of ginger remains unsold. As of April 2nd, only 5,679.1 quintals of ginger out of the 24,298 quintals stored in the Food Corporation of India (FCI) godown in Sairang have found buyers. With more than 18,600 quintals still in storage, there is growing concern over the possibility of spoilage if the remaining stock cannot be sold in time.

The Handholding Scheme introduced by the Lalduhoma government aimed to provide a stable income for farmers, has made considerable progress since its launch in February. The government has successfully procured 62,887 quintals of ginger from farmers at 54 secondary collection centers, ensuring a floor price of Rs 50 per kg to shield them from fluctuating market prices. This is in stark contrast to current market rates, which range between Rs 23 and Rs 25 per kg.

The initiative has provided significant financial relief to farmers, guaranteeing them a fixed price despite the market downturn. However, the responsibility of selling the stock now rests on the state government, which is facing mounting pressure to find buyers.

The Sairang godown, which houses the harvested ginger from across the state, has seen some purchases, though buyers remain highly selective. Workers at the godown report that ginger from Reiek village has been the most sought after, owing to its superior quality – fresh, clean, and well-handled. In contrast, some ginger from other areas have been noticeably poorly packaged and lacking identification tags, leading to concerns about their marketability.

As farmers await the next phase of the scheme and buyers continue to evaluate their options, the state government faces the critical task of finding swift and effective solutions to prevent further losses and ensure the success of the initiative designed to protect local farmers.
