The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in connection with the Panama papers. She appeared before the ED on Monday in association with the massive leak of financial files from the database of Mossack Fonseca four years ago.
Rai had been summoned earlier for questioning, but she had twice sought more time. Finally, the 48-year-old actress mother was questioned today by ED, as it is alleged that her wealth is stashed in offshore tax-havens.
The Panama Papers, are encrypted documents that contain private financial information of wealthy individuals and leaders that had previously been kept in secret. The documents were released on April 3, 2016, by Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ), a German newspaper.
Owing to several forex violations the ED with its investigations in 2017 issued notices to the Bachchan family to explain their foreign transfers since 2004 under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme. Although Aishwarya had submitted records on her foreign transfer of funds, the agency wanted to record her statement.
