AFSPA lifted from 4 more Police Station areas in Manipur, CM Biren Singn express joy

The four Police Station jurisdictions are-- Leimakhong, Nambol Wangoi and Moirang police stations

The Centre has lifted the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA) from four more police station jurisdictions in Manipur with effect from April 1, 2023. With this a total of 19 Police Station jurisdiction in the state will be exepmt from the law.

The four Police Station jurisdictions are– Leimakhong, Nambol Wangoi and Moirang police stations.

Meanwhile, with the exception of the areas that fall under the jurisdiction of these 19 police stations, the rest of the state remains to be designated as “Disturbed Areas” under the AFSPA for the next six months, starting on April 1, 2023.

Patsoi
Molrang
Porompat
Caching
Heingang
Jiribarn
Wangoi

Meanwhile, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has expressed happiness over he approval by the Ministry of Home Affairs to remove the Disturbed Area tag from the jurisdictions of 4 more police stations in the state.

He said that the centre lifted the tag of Disturbed Areas to foster peace without any recent struggle from the people.

The Chief Minister further said that the removal of the DA tag further showed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah regard the people of the Northeast, particularly those in Manipur, with love and respect.

It may be noted that, in addition to Manipur, the Central Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to reduce the “disturbed areas” listed under the AFSPA in Nagaland and Assam as well.

With the exception of the Imphal municipality area, entire Manipur was designated a “disturbed area” under AFSPA in 2004 and has been in force ever since.
