5 girl students killed in road accident in Imphal, CM Biren Singh expresses condolences

Five girls from Thambalnu Higher Secondary School were killed and several others injured in a tragic school bus accident that took place on Wednesday morning. The bus carrying 36 students and teachers were on a study tour to Leimatak under the Khoupum sub-division of Noney district in Manipur.

Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh, Manipur Minister of Health and Family Welfare, and a medical team led by Director Health Services have rushed to the scene.

The injured students have been shifted to Bishnupur District Hospital.

According to locals, the accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. when the school bus skidded off the state highway while taking a turn. The mishap occurred around 1 km before reaching Leimatak.
Locals rushed to the rescue of the students. Police team from Bishnupur district reached the spot and rescued rest of the teachers and students. A team from Khoupum police station also joined in the rescue operation.
A medical team from Bishnupur District Hospital also rushed to the accident spot.
Leimatak is known to also a famous tourist spot.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh condoled the deaths and said he was “deeply saddened to hear about the accident” and prayed for the safety of the others in the ill-fated bus.
“Deeply saddened to hear about the accident of a bus carrying school children at the Old Cachar Road today. SDRF, Medical team and MLAs have rushed to the site to coordinate the rescue operation. Praying for the safety of everyone in the bus”, the CM’s tweet read.
