There has been a mixed response to the 48-hour general strike called by joint students organisations including the All Manipur Students’ Union and the Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur that began on Wednesday midnight.

The joint students’ organisation comprising of different students’ bodies has called the General Strike demanding unconditional release of the Manipur University teachers and students who were picked up by police during the midnight raid inside the varsity campus on September 20.

Besides, the organisations are also demanding that security personnel who have taken over the University campus since the September 20 raid be asked to leave the campus immediately.

A strongly worded circular was issued by the State Government directing all State Government employees to attend office during the general Strike period.

The circular stated that attendance report should be sent out to the concerned administrative departments. The circular also directed all deputy commissioners to ensure smooth functioning of offices during the general strike period.

Heavy deployment of security personnel could be seen in the streets of Imphal.

Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has appealed to the students organisations to withdraw their call off their 48-hour general strike in the State.

The Chief Minister said that any issue can be resolved through dialogue and his government is ready to hold talks with the students.
