2nd Phase of Shillong decongestion to start soon: CM Conrad Sangma

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that the government bungalow at Barik Point will also be used as a parking space.

The Meghalaya government would start the second phase of the massive Shillong decongestion programme as soon as the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) gets over, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said.

CM Sangma reviewed the different aspects of the programme to in a meeting in Shillong on Friday and said that the concerns regarding parking, non-uniform lane width and recreational space were some of the issues discussed at the meeting.

Traffic congestion in Shillong has always been a major concern with the number of vehicles increasing in the capital city which is also a favourite tourist destination.

As part of the second phase, more government land will be converted into parking lots, transformation of government owned land into public spaces and green zones, discourage on-street parking and establishment of ‘No Parking Zone’.

While speaking to media, Sangma said, “There is a proposal to shift the PWD office from Barik Point very soon to convert the place into a parking lot and green space, besides hoisting the national flag, which will have a great length of 40 to 50 meters to have.”

Conrad said, “The government bungalow at Barik Point will also be used as a parking space”.
“Moreover, Hydari Park will also be converted into a parking lot after the animals are moved there from infancy within 3-4 months, as an extension of part to the civil hospital. So all these discussions took place and on the whole of the land available with certain departments, which is not being used in the most efficient manner, we have been working on rationalizing those lands whether it is in Shillong city or in other parts of the state, and a detailed presentation on the same has been given,” he added.

The Chief Minister further added, “We expect that when this happens there will be a lot more open space, parking space and vehicles parked on the road will be parked in the parking lots and we will have space to expand the road.”
