‘Chandrayaan 3, India’s Moon mission: landing time, its overall cost and more

First Published: 22nd August, 2023 15:03 IST

In less than 100 hours, 'Chandrayaan 3' will make its first attempt to land on Moon's south polar region

The countdown for the landing of ‘Chandrayaan 3’ on the Moon’s south pole zone has began, and India and the world await the historic landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the southern pole of the Moon.
Well, in less than 100 hours, the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO’s) ambitious mission will make its first attempt to land on Moon’s south polar region.

India will create history if the ‘Chandrayaan 3’, lands softly and successfully on the Moon.

ISRO latest lunar exploration mission, ‘Chandrayaan 3’, was launched on July 14, 2023.

The spacecraft will land on the moon on August 23, 2023, at 18:04 IST (6:04 PM).

The successful soft landing on the surface of the Moon would make India the fourth country after the United States, the former Soviet Union (now Russia), and China to achieve such a significant technological capability.

Chandrayaan-3’s mission objectives are to show a safe and soft landing on the lunar surface, wandering on the Moon, and conducting in-situ scientific experiments.

In comparison to Chandrayaan-2, Chandrayaan-3 has been built with the ability to autonomously handle a wide range of dispersion in order to ensure a smooth and secure landing.

Where to watch Chandrayaan 3 landing on moon?

Chandrayaan 3 moon landing will be live-streamed on ISRO’s official website, social media handles, YouTube, and on television.

The live streaming will start at around 17:27 IST (5:27 PM).

Cost of Chandrayaan 3

In comparison to India’s previous moon missions, Chandrayaan 2 and Chandrayaan 1, the cost of Chandrayaan 3 is less.

According to ISRO ex-Chairman K Sivan, the approved cost of this mission, excluding the cost of the launch vehicle, is roughly Rs. 250 crore.

Furthermore, the launch service costs Rs. 365 crore, bringing the entire expense of the Chandrayaan 3 mission to Rs. 615 crore.

When did the development phase of Chandrayaan 3 begin?

The development phase of Chandrayaan-3 began in January 2020, with the launch scheduled for 2021. However, the Covid-19 pandemic caused an unanticipated delay in the mission’s development.

India’s first Moon mission, Chandrayaan-1, achieved nearly all of its mission objectives and scientific goals, including the first detection of water on the lunar surface.

However, after 312 days of its original two-year mission, ISRO lost touch with the spacecraft.

Nonetheless, many consider Chandrayaan-1 to be a spectacular success, having received accolades from the National Space Society and the American.

Chandrayaan-1 is considered as a spectacular success, including accolades from the National Space Society and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

On September 6, 2019, India again attempted to reach the Moon with the Vikram lander carrying the Pragyan rover as part of the Chandrayaan-2 mission.

However, contact with the lander was lost 2.1km above the lunar surface, and NASA photos later proved it had crashed into the surface.

The Israeli Beresheet lander attempted a soft landing on the northern part of the Mare Serenitatis on April 11, 2019, but an Inertial Measurement Unit gyroscope failed during the braking procedure, resulting in communication failure 2.1km above the surface.

Beresheet would have been the first privately-funded mission to the Moon and Israel’s first mission to the Moon if it had been successful.
