Mystery shrouds Udalguri encounter: Did Assam Police kill the wrong guy?

First Published: 26th February, 2023 13:34 IST

Udalguri police appears to be in a tight spot over the killing of Kenaram Basumatary, a wanted thief as they seem to have gunned down the wrong person

It looks like the Udalguri police killed the wrong person.

Mystery shrouds the death of Kenaram Basumatary alias Shankar Basumatary, a wanted thief, who was shot dead in an encounter by the Assam Police at the No 1 Dhanashrikhuti village under the Rowta Police station in Udalguri district.

But within hours of the shoot out, controversy and confusion erupted over the encounter after the wife and family members of the dead man arrived at the Udalguri police station and claimed that the person whom the police had shot dead was Dimbeswar Musahary, a resident of Jengrengpara village, under the Govardhana village in Baksa district a d not Kenaram Basumatary as is being claimed by the police.
Dimbeswar Musahary’s wife said she is sure and certain that the person shot dead in the encounter was her husband.

If the claims made by the family are true, than the police might have a lot of answering to do. How did they get the man wrong? How did they end up taking the life of an innocent man? What went wrong? Was there information wrong? Did the police act in haste?

it is also quite surprising and interesting to note that when the police handed over the body of the deceased supposed to be Kenaram Basumatary to his family, the family of Kenaram accepted the body and performed the last rites.

Now Dimbeswar Musahary’s family members have demanded that his body be exhumed and be handed over to them.

It may be mentioned that the encounter took place yesterday morning where an individual of about 35-40 years was shot dead.

As per police sources, the individual shot dead was Kenaram Basumatary, who was allegedly involved in several theft cases in several places across Assam as well as other neighbouring states. The police had learnt about the movement of Basumatary in Rowta, allegedly planning for criminal activities alongwith one of his accomplices. Following this the police swung into action. When one of the accused tried to flee he was gunned down. Two police personned were also injured in the incident.
