The presence of microplastics in plastic water bottles has been previously known but the presence of nanoplastics is a cause of serious concern
Have you ever thought that you will be consuming 240000 plastic fragments while drinking water from a plastic bottle? A new study has brought to light a startling discovery that a one litre water bottle contains 240000 plastic fragments on an average. This previously unnoticed phenomenon has raised concerns that health issues because of plastic consumption may be undercounted.
According to the study published in the National Academy of Science the presence of nanoplastics (plastics less than 1 millimetre long) in water bottles has raised health concerns as it is considered toxic since their smaller size renders them much more capable, compared to microplastics, to enter the human body.
“Plastic pollution has been a rising global concern, with increasing plastic consumption every year. Microplastic contaminations have been identified to be prevalent from almost everywhere in the environments and even human biological samples. Moreover, mounting discoveries suggest that the fragmentation of plastic polymer does not stop at the micron level but rather continues to form nanoplastics with expected quantities orders of magnitude higher,” the report stated.
The presence of microplastics in water bottles has been previously known by scientists but the presence of nanoplastics documented in the report is a cause of serious concern.
