Director Pa Ranjith condemned the BJP-led government's silence on the ethnic violence in the state
Indian actor Kamal Haasan and director Pa Ranjith have condemned the horrific act of disrobing, parading nude and gang raping one of the two women in Manipur on May 4.
Talking about the video of two women being paraded throughout the state naked over the ethnic violence, actor Kamal Haasan said that the incident is a clear case for President’s rule.
“Breakdown of Constitutional machinery in Manipur. A clear case for the president’s rule,” Kamal Haasan tweeted.
Director Pa Ranjith also took to Twitter and condemned the BJP-led governments’ silence on the ethnic violence in the state.
Pa Ranjith’s tweet read: “Following the order to include the social-economically and politically dominant Meitei Hindu tribe into the Schedule Tribe list, broke out riots between Meitis and Kuki-Zo Christian Tribes. The riots have continued for two months leading to massive displacement, killing of civilians, sexual violence while internet has been shut down across the state. The attacks have taken communal forms with burning down of churches and places of historical significance of the Kuki-Zo tribe. The governments and its institutions in both – state and Centre being led by the BJP have disregarded the issue. This silence and insensitivity is in-acceptable and shame in a democracy. We demand the justice to the survivors of the violence and resignation of respective political representatives. My solidarity and support to the people of Manipur.”
Apart from Kamal Haasan and Pa Ranjith, many Bollywood stars–Akshay Kumar, Kiara Advani, Ritesh Deshmukh, Sonu Sood, Renuka Shahne and Urmila Matondkar have condemned the heinous crime and demanded stringent punishment against the culprit.
A viral video has been in circulation during the past few days of a mob dragging two women who were already stripped by them earlier.
The video demonstrated the scale and nature of the ongoing violence.
The viral video is reported to be of May 4 or the early days of the ethnic strife in Manipur that started on May 3.
