Sikkim Assembly polls 2024: CAP announces first list of 14 candidates, 2nd list on Mar 24

Of the 14 names, 13 are first-timers. Party spokesperson Mahesh Rai has been fielded from Namchi-Singithang, the seat won by Sikkim CM and SDF supremo Pawan Chamling since 1985

Sikkim’s regional political party, Citizen Action Party-Sikkim on Friday announced it’s first list of 14 candidates for the upcoming Sikkim Assembly elections 2024.

Of the 14 names announced, 13 are first-timers. Dawcho Lepcha who has been fielded from Gangtok seat, being the only politician who has contested elections earlier.

The party has fielded its spokesperson Mahesh Rai from the Namchi-Shingithang seat that has been represented by 5-time former Sikkim CM and SDF supremo Pawan Chamling. Chamling has won the seat 8 times in 1985, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019.

CAP has fielded former 2-time SDF MLA and Sikkim’s former Agriculture Minister Dawcho Lepcha from Gangtok seat.

The party announced it’s first list of candidates during the party’s press briefing held at Party Headquarters in Gangtok. The second list will be declared on March 24, party leaders said.

This is the maiden election for the party that was launched in 2023.

Here’s the list of candidates announced:

1. Namthang-Rateypani : Hari Chandra Chettri

2. Yuksam-Tashiding : Jigmey Bhutia

3. Yangthang : Phip Dhoj Limboo

4. Daramdin : Pem Dorjee Sherpa

5. Zoom-Salghari : Kaushal Lohagun

6. Namchi-Singithang : Mahesh Rai

7. Namcheybung : Severine Rai

8. Khamdong-Singtam : Sumati Chettri

9. Upper Tadong : Ravi Gurung

10. Arithang : Rikesh Pradhan

11. Gangtok : Dawcho Lepcha

12. Upper-Burtuk : Bhim Kumar Tamang

13. Dzongu : Jorbu Tshering Lepcha

14. Sangha : Champo Norcho Lepcha

Voting for the 32-member Sikkim Assembly will be held on April 19 and counting will take place on June 2.

 The Election Commission of India (ECI) had earlier notified dates for the upcoming election with last date of filing nominations being March 27. Scrutiny of nominations is to carried out by ECI on March 28 and March 30 is the date for withdrawal of candidature.
