Leaders of TIPRA Motha, Congress, CPI-M huddled for a closed door meeting to discuss the future course of action

Opposition parties in Tripura- TIPRA Motha, CPI-M and the Congress have ‘decided’ to fight the BJP together in the by-polls for Dhanpur and Boxanagar assembly constituencies on September 5.

As per inputs, the meeting primarily focused on the fact that there is ‘no division of votes’ amongst the Opposition parties.

Leader of Opposition in Tripura Legislative Assembly Animesh Debbarma, Tripura Congress President Ashish Saha, former minister Sudip Roy Barman, as well as CPI-M leaders including Jitendra Chowdhury huddled in Agartala to hold a closed door meeting and discuss the road map for the successful execution of their plans.

Sharing details about the ‘all important meeting’ held today, TIPRA Motha leader and Leader of Opposition Animesh Debbarma informed, “In the meeting we had requested the Congress, CPI-M for a preliminary discussion on the upcoming by-polls to discuss as to what would be the role of Opposition. The TIPRA Motha also conveyed that whatever the people want, has not been reflected in the Assembly properly. To ensure that such things do not repeat again we discussed on those aspects. We also had deliberations that there is no division of votes in the Opposition.”

But, Debbarma mentioned that no decision has been made so far.

“If You see the result of the last assembly election despite getting 40% less votes, the BJP has clinched power, but the Opposition despite getting more than 60% votes , we have to sit in the Opposition. This clearly explains as to what people want, ” Animesh Debbarma further said.

Tripura Congress President Ashish Kumar Saha who also attended the meeting said, “We discussed about the by-election for the 2 assembly constituencies. We had deliberations with the TIPRA Motha and CPI-M. We are hopeful that there will be a concrete decision soon.”

This is a significant development in Tripura politics since the Opposition have come together and are mulling to fight the polls united. The by-polls can be seen as a litmus test for the Opposition ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
