Reports quoting officials said that the woman sold the infant to a couple in Hezamara for Rs 5,500.

A heart wrenching incident has unfolded in Tripura, where financial hardship has forced a woman to sell her a day old girl child. A mother to 5 children, the 37-year old woman- a resident of Taraban Colony under the Gandacherra subdivision in Dhalai district, gave birth to a girl child on May 22 (Wednesday).

However, the woman apprehensive of the fact that it would be extemely difficult to raise another child, she decided to sell her new born girl child the very next day after giving birth.

Reports quoting officials said that the woman sold the infant to a couple in Hezamara for Rs 5,500. After receiving information about this, officials of the Dhalai district administration and Child Line quickly swung into action and got the new born back and reunited her with her mother.

Thereafter necessary support has been given to the mother and her child, with officials reportedly assuring continued support to the family.

According to reports, the husband of the woman had died about 5 months ago. The mother, because of her poverty, had approached doctors for an abortion but the doctors advised her not to kill her child and instead helped her to deliver the child.

Worth mentioning that the incident of selling the child came to light, after leader of Opposition and CPI (M) state committee secretary, Jitendra Chaudhury informed the matter to Tripura Chief Secretary.

“The mother earns livelihood by selling firewood. She has no other work to do, her husband is also no more. The baby was taken on Thursday, Rs 5500 was paid, but before that Rs 1500 more was paid. They have received nothing from the government,” a neighbour of the woman said.

The CPI-M leader said, “In our state extreme poverty is prevailing in rural areas and particularly in the hill areas. I have personally visited Dhalai district and had drawn the attention of the Chief Secretary and other government officials. The BJP government is still reluctant. Now, as an outcome of that extreme poverty cases of selling of children are happening. Day before yesterday in Gandacherra, a mother has been forced to sell her one day old baby, but the government is not ready to admit that the girl child had been sold. What is left to be said or seen when a mother has to sell her child? It is because of extreme poverty, this is the sorry state of affairs in Tripura because of the reluctance of the state government.”
