Sudip Roy Barman accused the BJP candidate of manipulating her surname and said that the opposition will surely raise the issue in the future.

Tripura Congress leader Sudip Roy Barman today launched a scathing attack on BJP Tripura East candidate Kriti Devi Singh Debbarma for allegedly manipulating facts in the affidavit she gave during the filing of nomination.

Sudip Roy Barman accused the BJP candidate of manipulating her surname and said that the opposition will surely raise the issue in the future.

Addressing a rally in support of Tripura East CPIM candidate Rajendra Reang, Barman said, “I always do not believe in personal attacks. But despite that I have to tell that the affidavit which has been filed (by BJP candidate Kriti Debi Singh Debbarma), it has many anomalies. But what is the mistake? One can search in Google and go to Election Commission website, it is found that Kriti Debi Singh is included in the Voter List of Chattisgarh under a polling centre in a particular assembly constituency. So when the certified copy of that electoral roll is brought to Tripura and submitted to the Returning Officer here, the name was not Kriti Debi Singh Debbarma, the Debbarma surname was added here (in Tripura). Now it is Kriti Debi Debbarma, the Singh is not there. No doubt that the name can be changed through an affidavit, but information must be published at least three time in a newspaper. I went thorugh every newspaper without missing a single date, but there was no affidavit done or a declaration made. We are compelled to go for legal action against Kriti Debi Singh in the days to come.”

“A 2018 affidavit (in Chattisgarh) shows that her name is Kriti Devi Singh, but another affidavit in 2024 swears that it is Kriti Devi Debbarma. So naturally it is clear that they have resorted to manipulating the reality,” Sudip Roy Barman further added.

The Congress leader asked the BJP as to why it could not find any other candidate and said, “There is no educational qualification. She is such a candidate who is not connected to the culture, traditions and language of the indigenous people here. Neither she can speak Kokborok, nor she can speak Bangla. I want to question from this stage that whether the BJP could not find any other candidate?”

On April 14, the Opposition in Tripura had revealed that a formal complaint has been lodged with the CEO Tripura, urging the ECI to investigate the allegations and, if warranted, cancel the candidate’s nomination.
