3 drug traffickers held in Tripura with brown sugar worth Rs 2.5 Crores

Tripura police arrested three individuals carrying drugs worth Rs 2.5 crore at a checkpoint set up at 91 Mile in the Assam-Agartala national highway, near Radhanagar area in Kumarghat under Unakoti district, on Tuesday night, said a senior police officer.

Kanta Jangir, Superintendent of Police, Unakoti district of Tripura, said that during the search of a vehicle on the basis of specific information from SDPO Kumarghat, police detained the vehicle and apprehended three individuals who were carrying a total of 551 grams of brown sugar in their car, which was coming from Silchar in neighbouring Assam.

She added that the seized contraband has an estimated market value of around Rs 2.5 crore, and all three have been arrested.

Further investigation is ongoing and a NDPS case has been launched against them.

Among those arrested are Vishma Deb Burma (35), Budhiram Deb Burma (34), and Jyotish Deb Burma (26), all hailing from Bishramganj in the bordering Sepahijala district of Tripura.

The arrested individuals will be presented in the district court today, and further anti-narcotics operations will be conducted in various parts of the district in the coming days.

Tripura police have launched a special operation to make the state drug-free.
