Sikkim CM Tamang chairs preparatory meet ahead of Maghey Sankranti Mela, 2023

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang chaired a preparatory meeting on Monday for the upcoming Jorethang Maghey Sankranti Mela, 2023.
Addressing the meeting, the Chief Minister highlighted the importance of the Jorethang Maghey Sankranti Mela and its historical significance. Chief Minister Tamang underlined that the ethos of Sikkim’s tradition and culture should be imbibed, and these kind of Melas are a platform wherein the cultural roots are reflected. He further stated that along with tradition, the modern, future-oriented, and forward-looking aspects of culture should also be considered. He also highlighted the need to focus on rural sports through such events.
During the meet, Secretary of Sports Department, Raju Basnet, informed that a sports festival has been initiated by the department, which will provide opportunities to youth to continue showcasing their talent during the course of the Mela.
As part of the festival, a constituency-level football match is also commencing from today. He remarked that in the coming day’s marathon, walkathon, and other adventure sports will also begin.
Principal Secretary, Rural Development Department, C. S. Rao, said that SARAS Mela will be set up at the SNT Premises, which will see the presence of stalls from different states in the country. Apart from the SARAS Mela, different self-help groups will also be participating during the mela.
DC (Namchi) M. Bharani Kumar briefed that a series of departmental meetings have already been conducted for the functioning of the upcoming Mela. He said that the Mobile Village Clinic, Aapada Mitra Stalls, and other additional departmental stalls will also be put up so as to impart necessary information to the general public. The meeting also saw deliberations between the organising committee and other stakeholders.
The meeting was attended by MLA Sunita Gajmer, Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba, Minister of Transport Department M. N. Sherpa, Chairpersons, Advisors, Secretaries, officials, and members of the Jorethang Maghe Mela organising committee.
