A political showdown has erupted between Sikkim and West Bengal after Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb abruptly halted the Rs. 197 crore SNT Guest House cum Health Care Center project just a day after Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang Golay laid its foundation stone.
The Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) revoked its approval for the project, citing concerns over the approach road originally marked as Hill Cart Road in the December 2024 plan along with objections to the building’s height and basement provisions. Public complaints reportedly played a key role in the decision.
The project, which was set to include a bus terminus, a healthcare center, and a guest house, aimed to benefit travelers from Sikkim and beyond. However, its sudden suspension has triggered political tensions.
The Sikkim BJP strongly condemned the move, arguing that a mayor from another state should not have the authority to stall a project for which the foundation stone was laid by a Chief Minister. During a press conference, party leaders slammed the decision as an insult to Sikkim and its leadership.
Furthermore, the Sikkim BJP has demanded action against officials responsible for allowing the Chief Minister to lay the foundation stone for the project without securing the necessary approvals.
