Northeast soaks in Christmas spirit; jingle bells ring all over region

Today is Christmas and people across the region are agog marking the birth of Jesus Christ. It’s the time of festive cheer, songs and carols, time for family and community feasts.

From Northeast to West coast, Kerala to LOC, Christmas celebrations are bringing one and all together.

Christmas celebrations have always been special in the Northeast. Churches have been decorated and lighted for the festive occasion. From Shillong to Aizawl, the spirit of Chirstmas has gripped all towns and cities of the region.

As the Yuletide festivities kicked in across the globe, people prayed for peace and amity and for the strengthening of brotherhood among various communities.

Meanwhile, President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in wishing people on the eve of Christmas.

“Merry Christmas to all fellow citizens and especially to our Christian brothers and sisters in India and abroad. This is a day to renew our commitment to values of compassion, love, fraternity. May Jesus Christ bless us all with happiness and joy’, President Ram Nath Kovind tweeted.

His teachings inspire millions across the world”, tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The spirit of celebrations pervaded the air with sounds of bells and carols at Don Bosco catholic church in Guwahati at the heart of the capital city in Panabazar area.

Celebrations began in Meghalaya as the clock struck 12 with people coming out of the various churches and exchanging greetings. The special mass held on Monday night witnessed good participation as faithfuls prayed and welcomed the birth of Jesus Christ.

Manipur along with the rest of the Northeast too soaked in the Christmas celebrations with revelers and devotees attending Prayer services while joining gatherings.

In the Himalayan state of Sikkim, people are celebrating Christmas with festive fervour. Gangtok, which is a favourite destination for tourists, has been decked up beautifully for the occasion.

Meanwhile, Christmas fervour has gripped the hill state of Mizoram. Echoes of prayers and worship services along with ‘Krismas Lenkhawm’ or Christmas songs sung by church members echoed the air since the last night.

The streets in Aizawl were decorated with themed lights and people were seen thronging the streets with family members and friends.
