2 construction workers fall from over 26 feet under construction bridge, dies

Two railroad construction workers were killed and 5 others were injured when they fell from around 8 meters (over 26 feet) under construction bridge in Mizoram on Wednesday evening.

The dead workers, both from West Bengal, have been identified as Samaul Haque (22) s/o Tanu SK, Sultanganj, Malda, West Bengal and Samirul Haque (28) s/o Farsen Ali, Chouduar, Koklamani, Malda, West Bengal. They died instantly when a temporary structure used to pull up heavy steel structure collapsed due to a large nut being broken.

They were working in the railroad project to link broad gauge railway between Assam border Bairabi rail station and Sihhmui near Aizawl and the accident occurred at railway bridge no. 89.

The bodies were taken to Silchar in Cachar district of Assam on Thursday from where the bodies would be transported to their homes in West Bengal.

Of the 5 persons injured, 4 were referred by the Kolasib district hospital and the Silchar Medical College hospital as their conditions were stated to be critical while one of them was discharged after administering first aid.

The railroad construction is being undertaken by ABCI Pvt. Limited and the company made all the arrangements while coffins for the deceased were donated by Kolasib Police officials.

ABCI Pvt Limited is the company that was operating the stone quarry at Maudarh in Mizoram that had collapsed killing 12 labourers. The incident took place in November 2022. A criminal case has been filed against ABCI, and the NGT had ordered the road construction company to pay Rs 70 crore for operating a stone mine without necessary clearances.
