A portion of the under construction PA Sangma Stadium at Tura in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills collapsed this morning.

The guard wall that collapsed due to incessant rains has raised questions about the construction quality and also about the credibility of the contractor.

The wall is said to have to collapsed as it could not withstand the mudslide. The debris buried residential premises as well as cars triggering panic in the area.
However, nobody was hurt in the incident.
Further details into the incident are awaited.

It maybe mentioned here that the inauguration of the stadium had led to a row between the Centre and the Conrad Sangma led Meghalaya government.
Earlier, in January this year Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs had visited the stadium and took a dig at the Meghalaya Government for inaugurating a half finished stadium.
During his visit, the Minister had pointed to the poor construction of the complex stating that he noticed quite a few beams already bent and said that the quality of the project left a lot to be desired. The Minister had also termed the inauguration of the stadium as a political gimmick by the Conrad Sangma led government as it was inaugurated just ahead of the Assembly elections in February this year.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma thereafter termed the Union Minister’s statements as ‘sad and unfortunate’ since questions were raised on development work which was done for the betterment of the people.

The stadium is being built at an estimated cost of Rs 127 crores and 90% of the funds is from the Centre.
