Meghalaya Rajya Sabha MP and NPP President, WR Kharlukhi, his wife and daughter are among the 27 people from Meghalaya stranded in conflict hit Israel.
As per reports, MP Kharlukhi will be evacuated today by the Indian Mission to Egypt.
As many as 27 people from Meghalaya are stuck in the Palestinian town of Bethlehem amid the prevailing war-like situation between Israel and Palestine. The citizens of Meghalaya were on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said in a post on X.
The Meghalaya Chief Minister has further informed that he is in constant touch with the Ministry of External Affairs and following up on the matter accordingly to ensure the safe return of all 27 people.
Over 250 Israelis were killed in the surprise attack on southern Israel by Hamas, a Palestinian militant group that fired more than 5,000 rockets from the Gaza Strip toward Israel early Saturday morning, Al Jazeera reported.
While more than 300 Palestinians have died in Israeli bombardments of the restricted Gaza territory following the massive Hamas strike that caught Israel off guard.
Since 2007, the Palestinian enclave has effectively been under an Israeli land, sea, and air blockade.
The latest attack comes after Israel closed its borders to Gazan workers.
Hundreds of Hamas militants have infiltrated Israel in SUVs, motorcycles, and paragliders and opened fire at civilians. Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared “war” and said his country would extract an “unprecedented price” from its enemy. “We are at war, not in an operation or in rounds, but at war.
Meanwhile, the India Embassy in Israel has asked its citizens to remain vigilant and observe safety protocols as advised by local authorities.
“Please exercise caution, avoid unnecessary movement, and stay close to safety shelters,” an advisory by the Indian embassy read.
India has also set up a helpline and an email address for citizens to reach out.
