Shah announced that a road in Delhi will be named after Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma in recognition of his contributions to the Bodo community.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday assured that the Central government will fully implement all conditions of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Peace Agreement within the next two years. He highlighted the peace and progress achieved in Bodoland since the signing of the accord in 2020.
Addressing the 57th Annual Conference of the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) at Bodofa Fwthar in Dotma, Kokrajhar, Shah stated that despite initial skepticism from the Congress party, the Assam government and the Centre have already implemented approximately 82% of the agreement’s conditions. He promised that the remaining clauses would be fulfilled within two years to establish long-lasting peace in the region.
Key Announcements by Amit Shah
Shah announced that a road in Delhi will be named after Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma in recognition of his contributions to the Bodo community. The naming ceremony will take place on April 1 in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other state leaders.
He also revealed that the Central and Assam governments will allocate Rs. 15 crore for the development of BTR, which is home to 35 lakh people. Shah said that the Centre will support the recognition of the Bodo traditional Bathau religion across India.
Encouraging youth participation in sports, Shah urged young athletes from Bodoland to prepare for the 2027 Olympics. He highlighted that Bodoland recently hosted the prestigious Durand Cup and expressed confidence that Bodo players would excel at the Olympics.
Shah highlighted the significant progress Bodoland has made since the signing of the peace accord. He noted that the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) was removed from the entire BTR region on April 1, 2022, under the terms of the agreement.
“As per the agreement, AFSPA has been lifted from BTR. Today, Kokrajhar’s mushroom from Bodoland is part of everyone’s cuisine under the ‘One District One Product’ initiative. More than a dozen Bodo products have received Geographical Indication (GI) tags, strengthening the industrial environment in BTR,” Shah said.
Shah credited ABSU for its crucial role in the BTR Peace Accord. “If ABSU had not played a key role, the accord would not have been signed, and peace would not have been established in Bodoland,” he said.
He paid tribute to 5,000 martyrs who lost their lives in the struggle for peace and development in Bodoland. “Today, Bodoland is living on the principles of Upendranath Brahma. ABSU is driving the vision of education, empowerment, and development. I am proud that classes and exams are now conducted in the Bodo language up to Class 12. This will ensure the preservation of the Bodo language for future generations,” Shah added.
Shah reiterated the Centre’s commitment to Bodoland’s development. “The Modi government will implement 100% of the agreement’s conditions in the next two years. After that, Bodoland will experience lasting peace and prosperity,” he assured.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Chief Pramod Boro also attended the event. The ongoing four-day conference, scheduled to conclude on March 16, includes discussions, competitive events, and cultural programs aimed at strengthening Bodo identity and fostering leadership.
