Minister AL Hek today held a meeting with Khasi Jaintia Fish Wholesalers' and Retailers’ Association in this regard
Minister-in-charge of Fisheries Department, Meghalaya, AL Hek, today informed that the department will constitute a fact-finding committee to probe the presence of formalin in fishes brought from outside the state.
Minister AL Hek today held a meeting with Khasi Jaintia Fish Wholesalers’ and Retailers’ Association in this regard.
Refuting claims of the presence of formalin in fish imported from Andhra Pradesh, the association said that fishes are tested for formalin before being sent to Meghalaya. The organisation also claimed to have a certificate of quality proving that fish imported from Andhra Pradesh do not contain formalin.
It may be mentioned here that the state government on June 9, 2023 banned the sale, distribution and storage of fish brought from outside the state for 15 days after presence of ‘formalin’ was detected in fishes being sold in the State.
The government has also imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh and imprisonment for 7 months for violating the order.
