The MPCC President further emphasized the need for unity within the party
Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President Vincent H. Pala today warned of stern action against any legislators planning to leave the party.
The party today held a crucial meeting at Congress Bhawan to address internal dissidence amid swirling rumours that 3 of its MLAs–Gabriel Wahlang, Charles Marngar, and Celestine Lyngdoh are considering a shift to the ruling National People’s Party (NPP).
Discussing his current position during the meeting, Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh, one of the legislators under scrutiny said that although there have been enticing offers from the NPP for the 3 Congress legislators, they have not yet made a final decision, said Pala.
Speaking to media after the meeting, the MPCC President described this situation as an attempt by the BJP-NPP alliance to weaken the Congress in Meghalaya and urged party leaders not to fall into the trap set by the ruling dispensation.
“The current government is not like the previous one; it is arrogant, corrupted, and bent on using illicit funds to overthrow other political parties. The government is trying to get our people into their party with that money, but we appeal our party leaders not to fall into the trap. We make our leaders understood that the ruling government, which hold 47 out of 60 assembly seats, does not need Congress MLAs. It is just trying to undermine the Congress Party’s position because it is aware of the fact that public sentiment is strongly in favour of Congress both in Meghalaya and nationwide,” said Pala.
The MPCC President further emphasized the need for unity within the party and warned that strict action would be taken against any legislators succumbing to the pressures and offers from rival parties.
“We did not spare anyone who left the party. The party has a set of rules and a set of practices. It always maintains the same form. So we have warned the MLAs that whatever we have done before, the same action will be taken against them,” Pala added.
The meeting was attended by Tura Lok Sabha MP, Saleng A. Sangma; Congress Legislature Party leader Ronnie V. Lyngdoh, Congress Working Presidents Deborah Marak and P.N. Syiem, among others.
