Senior Meghalaya Congress leader and former Minister Atul Marak passed away early on Sunday morning. He was 78 years old and was undergoing treatment in Shillong.

He leaves behind his wife, a daughter and two sons.

While condoling his demise Chief Minister Conrad Sangma tweeted, “I along with the people of the State, deeply mourn the demise of eminent politician, Sh Atul Marak. As former Minister, Sh Atul served the people with dedication & humility. He was a valued colleague of my late Father and will always be remembered for his leadership in Garo Hills.”

Meanwhile, the Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma also took to Twitter to condole the demise of late Marak.

Deeply saddened by the untimely demise of (L) Atul C Marak, one of the very senior politicians of d state; our deepest condolences to all d members of d bereaved family & pray for d repose of d departed soul,” Sangma tweeted.

Marak joined Congress as a youth leader and later became the youth congress president.

As a Congress candidate, he won from the Selsella constituency four times.

He left the Congress after losing state elections in 1998 and joined the NCP.

He was also a BJP member when Atal Behari Vajpayee was Prime Minister of India.

He last contested for election as an Independent in 2013 for the Selsella constituency, however he lost.
