Manipur celebrates Mera Hou Chongba

Mera Hou Chongba marks Unity, brotherhood and oneness as Manipur today marked the occasion in a traditional way.

Manipur today is celebrating the festival of oneness, unity and brotherhood on the occasion of ‘Mera Hou Chongba’.


The festival is celebrated on the 15th (full moon) day of the seventh month ‘Mera’ of Manipuri lunar calendar.


The celebration began with a vibrant procession of all the communities led by titular king and Rajya Sabha MP Leisemba Sanajaoba from Sana Konung, Palace till Kangla where the different communities prayed and celebrated together.


The titular king also lighted ‘Mera Thaomei’ (lamp), which signifies to tell people in the hills that their brother in the valley are doing well, at Kangla.


Rituals like ‘Mera Men Tongba’ and ‘Yenkhong Tamba’ were also administered in the presence of head priests.


Rajya Sabha MP Leisemba Sanajaoba expressed positivity that the age old traditional festival will further strengthen ties between people of the hills and the valley and instill peace and harmony in the state.
