The protestors, besides seeking justice for the victim, flayed the role of CM N Biren Singh and questioned his silence

Massive protests rocked the Imphal valley, Thoubal, Kakching and Bishnupur after another case of gang-rape in Churachandpur on May 3 came to the fore.

Sit-in demonstrations were held at multiple sites in Imphal demanding the government nab the culprits and ensure justice for the victim.

The protesters also questioned why Chief Minister N Biren Singh is silent on the matter.

It may be mentioned here that the case came to the fore after the survivor, who has been living in a relief camp, filed a police complaint on August 9.

The victim approached the police in Manipur’s Bishnupur district stating that she was sexually assaulted on May 3 in Churachandpur district.

Following the complaint, a Zero FIR (an FIR that can be registered by any police station, irrespective of jurisdiction, when it receives a complaint regarding a cognisable offence) was registered at the Bishnupur police station and the case was transferred to Churachandpur police station for further probe.

According to the FIR, the 37-year-old married woman was gang raped at Khumujamba Meitei Leikai in Churachandpur district by unidentified men.

According to the FIR, the incident took place at 6.30pm on May 3, the day the ethnic clashes erupted in Manipur.
