Manipur Crisis: Over 200 Students Refuse to Go Home, to Spend Night at Khwairamband Ima Market

Students from different higher secondary schools, colleges and universities decided not to go back home till Governor L P Acharya did not respond to their demands

The protests in Manipur has taken a very sad and unfortunate turn today when over 200 students, all 16-17 years old boys, from different higher secondary schools, colleges and universities decided not to go back home till Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya did not respond to their demands of handing over full charge of the unified Command to the state government, moving out Assam Rifles from the state and bring back peace to the state that has been on the edge since May 3, 2023.

The students decided to spend the night at the Khwairamband Ima market in Imphal.

Earlier in the day, the students the Class 11 and 12 students under the banner of All Manipur Students Union (AMSU) supported by Dhana Manjuri University Students Union (DMUSU), thronged the streets of Imphal and clashed with security forces as they marched to the Chief Minister and Governor’s House today. Ten students met Chief Minister N Biren Singh and submitted a memorandum demanding peaceful environment so that they could study and removal of Assam Rifles from entire Manipur, besides asking Centre to give full power to the state government. The students also met Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and submitted a similar memorandum.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh after the meeting said that he had a fruitful discussion with the students of Imhal College and Ibottonsana Higher Secondary School at the CM’s Secretariat.

Taking to X, CM Singh said, “Had a fruitful meeting with the students of Imphal College and Ibotonsana Higher Secondary School at my Secretariat. They voiced their concerns regarding the ongoing disturbances in our state, and I truly value their input. We had a constructive discussion about the challenges they are facing and the impact on their education. I want to assure all students that we are committed to addressing these issues. The voices of our youths are important, and together, we will strive for a better future for Manipur.”

In another tweet the CM said, “Had a meeting with the students of Manipur College at my Secretariat office. We are considering every measure to resolve the unrest at the earliest so that the students can resume their classes peacefully and pursue their academic careers. The state government gives utmost importance to resolve the grievances of the students concerning the prevailing situation in the state.”

Protest rallies were also held in Thoubal.
