Manipur: CoTU, ITLF’s 24-hr shutdown begins, normal life affected

Both CoTU and ITLF are demanding withdrawal of security forces from all Kuki-Zo-dominated areas
Normal life has come to a standstill in Manipur’s Kangpokpi and Churachandpur districts after the 24-hour shutdown called by the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) and the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF)’s 24-hour shutdown began with effect since midnight.
Volunteers put up stones and empty coal tar tins on the highway, blocking the otherwise busy Imphal-Dimapur road, the main lifeline of the state. Vehicles plying along the highway were not allowed to proceed further from Kangpokpi town and were sent back by those backing the shutdown.
The total shutdown has also made an impact in the Churachandpur district.
CoTU and ITLF imposed the 24-hour total shutdown in all Kuki-Zo-dominated areas demanding removal of security forces from all Kuki-Zo-dominated districts in the state.
The shutdown has been imposed at a time when security forces have come under a series of attacks from armed miscreants since December 30.
While relentless efforts are being made to restore peace, it was only yesterday (Tuesday) when, armed men launched an ambush in the border town of Moreh, on a combined team of security forces comprising CDO, IRB, Manipur Rifles, and BSF personnel.
At least 7 security personnel have reportedly been critically injured in the attack, after armed men fired an RPG at the convoy of the security forces.
As per inputs, 4 CDO and 3 BSF personnel are critically injured.
In the meantime amid the escalating situation Chief Minister N Biren Singh has strongly indicated that foreign mercenaries from Myanmar side may be involved in the attacks on forces in the area.
After taking stock of the health condition of the injured security force personnel at RIMS, CM N Biren Singh had said that there is a high possibility that Kuki National Army, Burma is involved in the attack on the forces.
