Manipur: CM N Biren meets BRO ADG (East), discusses border fencing issue with Myanmar

CM N Biren Singh said that he was happy to learn about the progress made so far.

The Centre as well as the Manipur government’s decision to execute a plan for completely sealing the porous border with Myanmar is progressing expeditiously.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh is closely monitoring the progress made so far and is in touch with the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) officials, the implementing agency for the fencing the borders with neighbouring Myanmar. The government intends to completely wipeout the menace of illegal migration as drugs trafficking, which it considers has now become an “urgent necessity”.

As part of the series of deliberations, Additional Director General Border Roads (East) PKH Singh met Chief Minister N Biren Singh in Imphal. During the meeting, the Chief Minister took stock of the border fencing works and expressed satisfaction over the progress being made.

Sharing details, CM N Biren Singh in a post on X said, “Shri PKH Singh, Additional Director General Border Roads (East) called on me at my residential office today.
Had a fruitful discussion on the progress of development and roadways construction in the state for an improved connectivity and overall growth in various sectors.
Also, pleased to learn about the progress of the ongoing fencing activity at the border areas to protect the state from various forms of external threats.”

Earlier, on September 24, the Manipur Chief Minister had met officials of the BRO to share and discuss plans on border fencing along the Indo-Myanmar border. CM N Biren Singh in a post on X had mentioned, “In view of the rise in illegal immigration and drugs smuggling from the neighbouring country, safeguarding our porous borders has become an urgent necessity.”

The meeting was held a day after the Manipur government announced that the Free Movement Regime with Myanmar was withdrawn in the wake of the alleged illegal influx.

Held a meeting with the officials of BRO and deliberated the plan to begin construction of an additional 70 km of border fencing along the Indo-Myanmar border. I was joined by Chief Secretary, DGP & officials from the Home Department.

Apart from rampant illegal migration and drugs trafficking, another impact of the porous border is that insurgent groups based in neighbouring nations are having a free roam which has posed to be an alarming security threat for the whole nation.

On October 1, Chief Minister N Biren Singh in a press briefing had maintained that the recent crisis in the state was neither a clash between ethnic group and nor a law-and-order issue of the State, but purely a war against the Indian Union by Myanmar and Bangladesh based Kuki militants in collaboration with militant groups operating in Manipur.

Less than 10% of Manipur’s 400-km international border with Myanmar is fenced which leaves the region open for cross-border illegal activities. But the geography in the areas have made the construction of border fencing more challenging. However, it is believed that fencing of areas where most illegal activies are carried out can be done easily.
