Chief Minister N Biren Singh has initiated a big step to look into the issue of increasing population in the state.

A family with 4 children will not be entitled to avail government benefits in Manipur from now on. This is a big move by the Chief Minister N Biren Singh government which was decided in the cabinet meeting.

The N Biren Singh cabinet also approved the setting up of the Manipur State Population Commission as an ordinance.

The minister further informed that the Manipur Legislative Assembly had earlier unanimously adopted as private member resolution to establish the population commission in the state.

MLA Kh Joykisan had raised the issue on the floor of the assembly expressing concern over the alleged infiltration of outsiders into the state. MLA Joykishan had claimed that there was a population growth of 153.3 per cent in the hill districts of Manipur from 1971 to 2001.

During 2001 to 2011, the population growth increased to 250.0 per cent.
