The woman refused to pay the fine or comply with the diktat, leading to her social exclusion

In a bizarre incident, a woman from Assam was ostracised and fined Rs 5,000 for wearing salwar kameez.

The villagers of Gongajani Kuworigaon in the Sipajhar district of Assam imposed the penalty, deeming her attire unacceptable.

The woman refused to pay the fine or comply with the diktat, leading to her social exclusion. She and her family have now sought intervention from local authorities, demanding justice.

While talking to reporters, the lady said, “I have been told to pay a fine of Rs 5,000 for wearing salwar-kameez or to leave the village. I run a small shop and since I need to bring items from the market, I prefer wearing a salwar rather than a mekhela-sador or a saree. But villagers raised objection to my wearing salwar-kameez and have ostracized my family and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on us.”

“We are not allowed to visit the houses of other people in the village. My three children have also been told not to go to shops, let alone visit other villagers. Villagers have also asked their children to not speak to my kids at school too,” she further stated.

This incident has sparked outrage, highlighting the clash between modernisation and regressive practices still prevalent in certain parts of society. Authorities are expected to investigate and address the matter promptly.
