Thank ULFA-I for no violence in 2-and-half years: Assam CM

First Published: 16th November, 2023 12:38 IST

The ULFA has not carried out blasts or firing in the last 2 years, said Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Will the ULFA-I soon join the peace process, especially when Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been making earnest appeals to the group?

Although something significant is yet to be achieved on this, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is quite positive about the indications prevailing as of now.

According to the Assam Chief Minister, it is very important to consider that the ULFA-I has not indulged in any sort of violence over the past 2 and half years. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the ULFA-I indeed must be thanked for this.

Chief Minister Sarma said, “You have to thank ULFA for the fact that they have not done anything (violence) in the last 2 and half years. Neither there is a single blast, nor a single bullet has been fired by them during this time. The topic of ULFA is not there anywhere. I want to say that Paresh Baruah has not triggered any disturbance in the last 2 and half years. This means that there is a conducive environment building up somewhere. Everything cannot be revealed to the public, but Paresh Baruah or the ULFA has not carried out any subversive activities in the last 2 and half years.”

On October 31, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma batted for permanent peace and appealed ULFA-I Commander-in-Chief Paresh Baruah to come to the talks table and iniate a peace process. Chief Minister Sarma appealed Paresh Baruah to shun the path of violence and embrace the path of peace through dialogue for building a New Assam.
