NIT Silchar Protests: Karimganj MP seeks Union Edu Min, Assam CM’s intervention

The Karimganj MP in an open letter to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Assam CM, appealed them to resolve the issues of the students

Seven days on but the situation at the NIT Silchar in Assam’s Cachar district is yet to pacify. Agitating students are refusing to budge despite the NIT authorities assuring the students of ‘justice’ to the dead 3rd year Mechanical Engineering student who died by suicide on September 15.
Now Karimganj MP Kripanath Mallah has extended support to the agitating students who began an indefinite strike on September 18 seeking justice for the deceased.
In an open letter to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sharma, the Karimganj MP has made a fervent appeal to the Union Minister and the CM to address the concerns of the protesting students.
The MP in a video message to Northeast Live said, “It is very unfortunate that a student in the NIT Silchar died by suicide on September 15. But till now nothing is clear as to why he resorted to doing so. I request our CM and the Education minister to conduct a thorough probe into the matter. Inquiry must be done as to why the student committed suicide. He had come here to make his future, but what compelled him to do so? Because of this there is a stir in the NIT Silchar. I want that whoever is guilty must be punished so that there is no similar problem in the future. I demand that whatever issues the students are facing must be resolved as soon as possible.”
Since September 18, students at the premier learning institute are on an indefinite hunger strike seeking resignation of Dean (Academics) Dr Binoy Krishna Roy blaming him for the suicide committed by a 3rd year student. The agitating students are also seeking a High Level Committee for academic reforms to minimise the pressure on the students.
On September 16, violent scenes were witnessed at the NIT, Silchar after students went on a rampage vandalising vehicles, holding the Dean and his family hostage and even hitting Cachar SP Numal Mahatta with a water bottle while protesting the suicide of the fellow student.
