Intelligence Bureau, Assam Police closely monitoring presence of Bangladesh based terror modules

Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Deka said that steps are being taken to deal with any kind of eventuality

The Intelligence Bureau (IB) along with the Assam Police is keeping a close watch on the presence of terror groups particularly from Bangladesh in Assam.

Director of IB, Tapan Deka said that the security agencies have not let their guards down as far as tackling such threats is concerned. Deka further allayed apprehensions.

He said, “we are keeping a close eye on that with the Assam Police from the national and international perspective. There is nothing to worry. Steps are being taken to resolve any small or big issues that may arise.”

The IB Director also affirmed that there is no threat to Assam as of now. Regarding this he stated, “There is no prevalent threat to Assam as of now, but there may be since the state shares international borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar. They have their presence, but everyone must be alert everytime. Assam Police now has the capability to handle any eventuality. There is nothing much to be concerned as of now, but still we are very alert.”

The IB Director said this after attending the Assam Police Day celebrations.

Tapan Deka’s statements assumes a lot of significance since the security agencies had launched a mega crackdown and busted several terror modules last year which were linked to Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) based in Bangladesh, which operates at the behest of the Al Qaeda (Indian Subcontinent).

The Assam police in the last two years has busted 6 modules of ABT which is affiliated to AQIS based in neighbouring Bangladesh. The Barpeta model of Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) busted in April this year was led by Bangladesh terrorist Saiful Islam. The accused was operating under the cover of an Arabic teacher and a Imam at a mosque.

It should be mentioned that Assam government handed over the Bangladesh terrorist module cases to NIA in March 2022 for further investigation.

On the other hand, Tapan Deka advocated for a national level validation, and the need to take into cognizance, the courage and bravery of the Assam Police. He said, “Assam Police has a glorious history. People of the nation obviously know about terrorism in Punjab, the counter-insurgency operations in J & K but they are not fully aware about what Assam Police have done so far in this region. The contributions and sacrifices made by Assam Police to turn the state into a safe zone must be known to all. Assam Police has a big contribution in this. The situation during the 90s particularly after 1985 was very volatile, but the Assam Police with limited resources could successfully control the situation. Permanent steps must be taken to ensure that such a situation never arises, for that the people and the police have to work together. Without peoples’ cooperation police alone cannot be successful. Since peace has returned to the state, the role of people is paramount in tackling crime as well as other problems in the society jointly with the police.”
