Employees of a firm outsourced by Gauhati University following a MOU in 2017 is found to be prima facie involved in inflating marks of students for fee ranging from Rs

The Gauhati University is embroiled in the worst controversy in its 76 years of existence with the coming to light of sensational details about a mega marksheet scam.

At least 8 individuals have been arrested and 1 detained so far in a joint operation by the Assam Police and the CID as the probe into the shocking scam intensifies. The combined team apprehended the suspects from various parts of the state, including Guwahati, Dhubri and Kalgachia in Barpeta.

Employees of a firm outsourced by Gauhati University following a MOU in 2017 is found to be prima facie involved in inflating marks of students for fee ranging from Rs 16,000 to 1 lakh.

When confronted the university VC Pratap Jyoti Handique told North East Live that the University is already cooperating with the police since June 3. VC Handique also said that he was in favour of an extensive probe into the matter adding that only full-fledged investigation can put a halt to such incidents taking place in future. The VC revealed that an employee of the firm which is operating the integrated University management system has been arrested. Earlier this week, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while considering the gravity of the matter, handed over the case to the CID of Assam police for a detailed investigation.

Sources at GU said the firm was being paid 3 to 4 crore per year for work like data entry etc.

Sources also claimed that GU authorities may have violated protocol when it provided classified info to this outsourced company outside their mandated task. The GU sources further claimed that the university broke protocol when it provided the firm managing the IUMS with confidential code enabling it to manipulate crucial things like a students’ marks even without the knowledge of the GU authorities.

This company managing the IUMS is identified as Delhi based ITI limited, according to the GU VC.
The GU inflated marks scam has drawn sharp reactions in the state because there are as many as 7 lakh students across 330 colleges affiliated to the university.

As per reports, the arrested and individuals have been identified as Azizul Haque, Krishan Krishnamurti, Ismail Hussain, Alomgir Khan, Moinul Haque, Hamezuddin, Abul Baser, Aminul Islam, and Shivtosh Mahato.

Among these Krishan Krishnamurti is an empoyee of ITI Limited.

When Northeast Live spoke exclusively to Gauhati University Vice Chancellor Pratap Jyoti Handique who said that while the incident may just be limited to Barpeta district, there should be a wider probe to make sure such cases did not happen elsewhere.
