ICC NE Chairman Mahesh Saharia donates Rs 17.98 lakhs to CM’s Fund for evaluation to list Moidams as World Heritage Site

Moidams are sacred burial mounds of the Ahom kings and Ahom royalty
Chairman, Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Northeast, Mahesh Saharia on Sunday donated USD 22,000 (Rs 17,98,401 lakhs) to the Assam Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to be used for the final evaluation to list Moidams as a World Heritage Site. The donation was made through RG Saharia Foundation.
Taking to Twitter, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma conveyed his gratitude to Chairman Saharia for the donation.
Chairman Saharia applauded the achievement of Government of Assam and said it is a “matter of great pride that UNESCO found that the Nomination of Moidam-the Mound Burial System of the Ahom Dynasty for inscription in the World Heritage List met all the technical requirements.”
“Moidam-the Mound Burial System of the Ahom Dynasty inscription in the World Heritage List will be a great achievement for the entire North East. After the unique two events of Listing of A world heritage site, the tourism sector of the state will also get a great boost. If Moidams are get the World Heritage site recognition, it will not only be a beneficial to the state of Assam but the entire North East,” the release further said.
Moidams are vaulted chamber (chow-chali), often double storied entered through an arched passage. There were more than 150 Moidams, but currently only 30 Moidams are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and Assam State Archaeology Department, and the remaining Moidams are unprotected.
Charaideo was the original kingdom of the Ahom’s built by Chaolung Sukhapa, the founder of the Ahom dynasty in 1253 CE.
The Chamber also lauded the various initiatives taken by the state government for rapid development of the state like ease of living, ease of doing business, infrastructure development, focus on preservation of heritage and nature, and all-round rapid development of the state to take it to the Top 5 States, as well as the bold and pragmatic proposals introduced in the current budget.
Mahesh Kumar Saharia is a prominent industrialist, philanthropist, prolific writer, and an avid photographer.
