Fearing that some mishap may happen due to heavy traffic, CM Sarma ordered that these families be moved from the spot and rehabilitated somewhere else

In a late-night drive, Kamrup (M) Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha and other senior officials of Kamrup Metro district administration went around the Ulubari area of Guwahati to remove and relocate beggars and other homeless people taking shelter under the Ulubari flyover.

The Authorities sprang into action after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ordered that the homeless families taking shelter in makeshift shelters under the Ulubari Flyover in Guwahati be relocated.

Several homeless families, including children, have been taking shelter under the flyover in makeshift shelters.

Fearing that some mishap may happen someday due to the heavy traffic in the area, CM Sarma ordered that these families be moved from the spot and rehabilitated somewhere else.

Pallav Gopal Jha, Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup Metro, said that they are conducting a drive to send them to government shelter homes and NGOs.

The Deputy Commissioner noted that the number of street dwellers has increased in Guwahati, especially in areas like Ulubari, Sukreswar, Kamakhya, and Paltanbazar.

“We found that most are involved in begging activities. Whenever we take them to shelter homes, they run away,” the DC added.

DC Pallav Gopal Jha added that the authorities will try to improve the condition of the shelter homes and provide government schemes to the homeless so that they don’t run away from the shelter homes.
