Crackdown on child marriage in Assam: 2170 people arrested so far

The maximum number of people have been arrested from Dhubri, Barpeta, Kokrajhar, and Biswanath districts

So far 2,170 persons involved in child marriage cases have been arrested across Assam till this morning, said Assam Police spokesperson Prasanta Kumar Bhuyan.

“The figures of the arrests in Child Marriage cases have risen and it will increase further,” Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) (IGP L&O) Bhuyan told ANI.

As per the latest reports, as many as 29 persons have been arrested from Bongaigaon this morning, while 10 people have been arrested from Dhubri, 5 people from Nagaon, 5 people from Hailakandi, and 6 people from Goalpara.

Director General of Assam Police (DGP) GP Singh on Friday (February 3) said that 4,074 cases related to child marriage have been registered at different police stations across the state. 52 of the arrested people were priests and Qazis, said GP Singh.

Most of the cases have been registered under different provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and Indian Penal Code sections and action will be taken as per the law, said DGP Singh.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reiterated that his government is firm in its resolve to put a stop to child marriage in the state therefore the crackdown against child marriages in the state would continue in the coming days.
